Webnerd ZA - Website Security

In this topic we address various aspects of website security.  We attempt to write about the most recent threats that all site owners should be aware of.

SSL for your Wordpress website

Webnerd through CPanel pre-install SSL certificates.

Now we will show you how to get your Wordpress website to start using the certificate and forcing your visitors to see the encrypted version of your website.

Wordpress have a number of ways of doing this the easiest way is to simply search through the plugins and install one of the SSL plugins.

However if you are less trusting sort or just enjoy getting stuck in then the other way would be the following:

Login to the administration area / backend.

Scroll down to general settings.

Edit both the "website address (URL)" as well as the wordpress address (URL) changing "http://" to now read "https://"

Now you need to edit your .htaccess file.

This file resides in the root folder - typically this means the public_folder.

add the lines

<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>

RewriteEngine On

RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off

RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]

</IfModule>

Now you are all done and visitors to your site can safely enter their username and password knowing its secure to do so.
